A Squared Plus Engineering Support Group, LLC (A2+ESG) is a Hampstead, Carroll County, Maryland based mechanical, electrical, plumbing and information transportation engineering firm who’s experience encompasses the design of both new and system modifications for residential, commercial, industrial and institutional type facilities.  The firm was established in 2008.


A Squared Plus Engineering Support Group, LLC has the capability of providing support services associated with the design of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, lighting and information transportation systems.  Types of engineering support services include, but are not be limited to, design, computer aided drafting (CAD), construction administration, probable cost analysis, LEED consulting services and life cycle evaluations.

Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department - Station 12

  • Carroll County, Maryland
  • Construction Classificaiton: New/Renovation/Addition
  • Size: 42,500 sq. ft.
  • Description: Designed in two phases, totaling 42,000 sq. ft. of new construction. Mechanical designs included infrared heaters, gas furnaces with condensing units, rooftop units and distribution ductwork. Plumbing designed included  the following systems: natural gas piping, storm water piping, domestic piping, sand/oil interceptor, commercial kitchen, grease waste and sanitary piping. Electrical designs included utility and emergency power distribution, interior & exterior lighting, voice & data communications, CCTV & access control systems and fire alarm system.

Kingsville Volunteer Fire Company - Station 48

  • Construction Classification: New/Renovation/Addition
  • Size: 18,500 sq. ft.
  • Description: Renovations and additions to an existing (2) story 6,500 sq. ft. station. Mechanical designs included the following systems: LP gas piping, storm water piping, domestic piping, sand/oil   interceptor and sanitary piping.

Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Station Expansion

  • Description: Design of 7,000 sq. ft. of expansion to the Main Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Station within an existing shell space. Mechanical designs included split heat pumps, fans, and distribution ductwork. Plumbing designed included the following systems: domestic piping. Holding cells plumbing was an alternate on the project. Electrical Designs included utility and emergency power distribution, interior & exterior lighting, voice & data communications, CCTV & access control systems and fire alarm system.

Corola EMS Paramedic - Station 1

  • Size: 6,400 sq. ft.
  • Description: New (2) story 6,400 sq. ft. EMS prototype career station for Cecil County Dept. of Emergency Services. Mechanical designs included infrared heaters, LP furnaces with condensing units, fans, and distribution ductwork. Plumbing designed included the following systems: LP gas piping, storm water piping, domestic piping, sanitary piping and a state of the art fire-mist sprinkler system. Electrical designs included utility and emergency power distribution, interior & exterior lighting, voice & data communications, CCTV & access control systems and fire alarm system.

Maryland Correctional Training Center

  • Construction Classification: Renovation

  • Description: Replacement of aging underground 15KV distribution feeders and switchgear throughout the entire compound that consists of eight (8) inmate housing units, a gymnasium, a dining hall, an administration/chapel building, a medical unit, and three (3) educational buildings. Design needed to reflect the installation of work in phases in order to maintain the operation of the compound at all times.

Western Correctional Institution

  • Description: The project consists of the removal and replacement of ten (10) total electrical geared door operators. Electrical door operators were replaced with pneumatic system consists of a freestanding duplex compressor unit with tank and duplex starter/alternator control panel, a multi-port manifold and a network of concealed piping connecting the door operators and tank. New wiring was installed between the new door operators and the existing door controllers/relay cabinets in order to remotely control and monitor the doors from the existing guard stations.

Queen Anne's County Historic Courthouse Holding Cells

  • Description: Renovation within basement of the historic courthouse holding cells. Mechanical designs included expansion of existing HVAC and Plumbing systems. Electrical designs included utility and emergency power distribution, interior & exterior lighting, voice & data communications, CCTV & access control systems and fire alarm system.

  • Description: 14 acre site with the intension of constructing 4 future commercial buildings, 39 townhouses and 70 apartments.  Design and coordination efforts included underground raceway infrastructures for the various utility companies (Baltimore Gas and Electric, Washington Gas, Comcast and Verizon) and for future branch circuit wiring to future pole lights.

Maryland Correctional Training Center

The first phase of the project entailed 1) surveying the existing conditions, 2) developing a preliminary design concept and 3) developing a preliminary probable cost for construction. The second phase entailed the development of contract documents based on Owner comments and budget restraints.

Queen Anne's County Courthouse Generator

  • Description: Project consisted of the design for the replacement of the building’s inoperable exterior mounted 50KW diesel engine generator set.  New generator is identical in size to the original and is equipped with weatherproof housing and double-wall sub-base fuel tank.  Existing automatic transfer switch and feeders were re-used.

Anne Arundel Community College Cyber-Tech Center

  • Size: 8,000 sq. ft.
  • Description: Renovation/conversion of 4th floor (approx. 8,000 sq. ft.) into modern classrooms Design efforts included structured cabling, expansion of the building’s existing CCTV system, per the end user’s requirements, for both building wide internet and local classroom intranet data distribution systems.

Anne Arundel Community College Projects

    • IT Closet/Rooms Temperature Evaluation:  Services included the survey of various selected remote information technology equipment spaces throughout the campus and to develop recommendations for maintaining proper atmospheric temperature and humidity conditions within.  Other recommendations related to equipment grounding were also offered.       
    • Computer Room Cooling System Evaluation:  Services included a survey of the campus’s main computer room second floor of the Careers Center building and to develop recommendations for repairing and enhancing the air condition system.  Among the recommendations included suggestions for the placement of equipment racks in order form “hot” and “cold” isles.      
    • Resource Management Building:  The purpose of the project was to develop documents for the re-feeding of the Resource Management Building from a different utility power source on campus.  By doing so, it allowed for power to be re-directed for use elsewhere.
    • Florestano Building Nursing Lab:  Services included both the design and evaluation of electrical, data and HVAC systems within an existing 4 story academic building in order to support the need for 16 student nursing simulation stations.      
    • West Campus Duplex Sewage Pump:  Services included surveying, calculations, a report and contract documents for the replacement of an existing submersible duplex sewage ejector pump located on the west side of the campus.

Mt. Washington Elementary

  • Baltmore, Maryland

  • Size: 7,000 sq. ft.
  • Description: Project consisted of reconfiguring approximately 7,000 square feet of existing area in order for the school to accommodate the enrollment of 8th grade level students. Among the types of rooms renovated included a library, computer classroom, classrooms and administration support offices. Information Transportation (IT) system engineer tasks included the design of the structured cabling infrastructure for both voice and video distribution system. In addition, existing P.A. and program clock systems required alterations.

Chopticon High School

  • Description: Project consisted of the design to install a new panelboard, feeder and additional branch circuit wiring in order to supply power to numerous woodworking bench-top type tools within the school’s existing wood shop classroom.

  • Description: Project consisted of creating additional offices, conference rooms and support spaces within the perimeter of the existing facility through renovating the lower level and adding a mezzanine for a total office area of approximately 14,000 square foot.  Mechanical designs included gas fired rooftop units with variable air volume (VAV) boxes and distribution ductwork.  Plumbing designs included domestic water, natural gas and sanitary piping systems.  Electrical designs included interior utility powered lighting, emergency egress and exit lighting, branch circuit wiring for general and specific equipment power, raceways for voice and data cabling, power distribution, and fire alarm and detection system.

Fairwinds Beach Club Pavillion

  • Size: 1,500 sq. ft.
  • Description: Project consisted of the replacement and enlargement of the existing outdoor Pavilion structure. Total building area is approximately 1500 square foot.  Building contains a kitchen, bathrooms with shower facilities and a 60 person covered seating area. Structure was constructed on pylons along the Severn River and is connected to a nearby boat docking pier. Mechanical design included exhaust fans and distribution ductwork.  Plumbing design included natural gas, domestic water, grease waste and sanitary piping systems.  New metered electrical service, new telephone service and new cable TV service was installed.  Electrical services included the design of communications, utility and emergency lighting and power distribution systems.

Fallston Activity Center

  • Size: 45,000 sq. ft.

Perry Hall Library

  • Baltimore, Maryland

  • Size: 25,000 sq. ft.
  • Description: Project consisted of the construction of a new single story structure with a total area of approximately 25,000 square feet. The building is among the first LEED Silver rated structures in Baltimore County, Maryland. Fire protection for the building is accomplished through the installation of a deluge dry type sprinkler system that is activated by area smoke detectors monitored by the building’s fire alarm and detection system. A new secondary metered utility power service was installed and originates from a Power Company 120/28 volt pad mounted transformer. Emergency egress and exit lighting was accomplished through the installation of self-contain battery operated lights and exit signs. Among the other special electrical systems designed and installed includes data, voice, paging, audio/visual, intrusion protection and CCTV.

  • Description: 1,400 square foot restaurant with non-cooking, limited commercial kitchen within the Harford Mall.  Mechanical design included a gas fired rooftop unit and distribution ductwork.  Plumbing designs included domestic water, grease waste and sanitary piping systems.  Plumbing design efforts also included the sizing of the kitchen’s grease interceptor.   Electrical designs included interior utility powered lighting, emergency egress and exit lighting, branch circuit wiring for general and specific equipment power, raceways for voice and data cabling, and metered utility power distribution.

  • Description: 630 square foot fast-food tenant space with limited commercial kitchen.  Mechanical design included the alteration and extension of existing distribution ductwork.  Plumbing designs included domestic water, grease waste and sanitary piping systems. Plumbing design efforts also included the sizing of the kitchen’s grease interceptor.  Electrical designs included interior utility powered lighting, emergency egress and exit lighting, branch circuit wiring for general and specific equipment power, raceways for voice and data cabling, metered utility power distribution, and alterations/extensions to the building’s existing voice evacuation type fire alarm and detection system.

  • Size: 21,000 sq. ft.
  • Description: Project consisted of transforming a single 21,000 sq. ft. space into three (3) individually metered retail tenants.  Mechanical designs included gas fired rooftop units and distribution ductwork.  Plumbing designs included domestic water, natural gas and sanitary piping systems.  Electrical designs included interior utility powered lighting, emergency egress and exit lighting, branch circuit wiring for general and specific equipment power, raceways for incoming telephone services, power distribution, and fire alarm and detection system.  Efforts also included coordination with the local utility companies in order to provide each tenant space with a separate electric and gas meter.

Office

Jason Pharmaceutical, Inc.

  • Owings Mills, Maryland
  • Construction Classification: Renovation
  • Size: 21,300 sq. ft.
  • Description: The project was the renovation of the existing single story office building approx. 21,300+ sq. ft. Electrical design included interior utility lighting and controls, structured cabling for voice distribution systems, self-contained emergency and exit lighting, and branch circuit wiring for general and specific power devices. The building’s existing 120/208 volt service and distribution system was altered to provide for separate utility power company metering. Design of the mechanical system included adding new rooftop units and reused existing ductwork when possible. Duct distribution, design and sizing of domestic plumbing systems and modifications of sanitary systems. Since no documentation of existing mechanical, plumbing and electrical was not available, site observation was performed.

  • Description: In conjunction with the installation of a new mission critical Data Center, a coordination and short circuit study was performed in order to verify the adequacy of the fault interrupting current ratings of over-current protection devices and equipment.  Study also verified and made recommendations for ground fault, long term and short term settings on adjustable breakers in order to assure a well coordinated power distribution system.

Bayside Homes

  • Size: 1,900 - 2,100 sq. ft. (6 units)
  • Description: Project consists of six typical slab-on-grade residential units that range in size between 1,919 and 2,102 square feet and are located within the boundaries of the Aberdeen Proving Grounds.  Mechanical designs include gas fired furnaces with outdoor condensing unit, exhaust fans and distribution ductwork.  Plumbing designs included domestic water, natural gas and sanitary piping systems.

Maryland School for the Deaf

  • Size: N/A
  • Description: Project encompassed the removal of an existing building, re-configuring a portion of facility’s topography and to install new paved areas for vehicular parking and passenger drop-off/pick-up zones. The installation of two (2) electric operated vehicular barrier gates was also a part of the project’s scope. Electrical design tasks included exterior pathway and roadway lighting, branch circuit wiring and controls for lights, branch circuit wiring for vehicular barrier gates, and the interfacing/expansion of the facility’s access control system.  As a part of the lighting design process, point-by-point photometric calculations and plans were developed in order to ensure no light pollution and uniform light levels.

Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home

  • Size: 80,000 sq. ft.
  • Description: Design of various electrical systems for the construction of new 80,000+ sq. ft., nursing home/ assisted living facility. Designs included underground infrastructure for Power Company’s metered secondary service, interior and exterior lighting, video distribution, voice distribution, data distribution, fire alarm, public address, emergency power distribution and 277/480 volt utility (normal) power distribution.

Western Maryland Hospital Center

  • Description: Design for the complete upgrade of the electrical power and lighting systems a the existing 120 bed chronic disease hospital. Designs included dual primary metered services, interior lighting, utility (normal) power distribution, , emergency power distribution with dual generator sets and synchronization gear and complete rewiring of branch circuits throughout.

  • Description: Design of mechanical and plumbing systems for the 3 story building 51,000 sq. ft. renovation. Design included sizing of equipment (i.e. Energy Recovery Units, Packaged Terminal Units, Split systems Heat Pumps, Water Heaters), design of mechanical systems, design and sizing of natural gas, domestic, storm water and sanitary piping.

Monticello Apartments

  • Alexandria, Virginia

  • Size: 154,000 sq. ft.
  • Description: As a part of the master plan to renovate the facility’s seven (1) apartment building’s, this portion of the project consisted of upgrading the services to each building and the individually Power Company metered feeders to each apartment (over 100 apartments).  In addition to the calculations and designs for the upgraded electrical distribution systems, tasks also included coordination with the local Power Company.

Crystal Houses III

  • Description: Design of mechanical and plumbing systems for the construction of 2 building totaling 200,950 sq. ft. of garage and 243,700 sq. ft. of apartments, $45 million buildings. Design included sizing of equipment (i.e. Rooftop Units, Split Systems Heat Pump, Water Heaters), design of mechanical systems, design and sizing of domestic, natural gas piping, storm water piping and sanitary piping, LEED forms.

  • Description: Design of electrical systems for the construction of a 24 story, 219 dwelling unit high rise building. Estimated construction budget of $90 million. Designs included electrical service distribution with individual dwelling unit metering, interior and exterior lighting, general and specific branch power, voice evacuation type fire alarm, emergency power distribution, voice distribution, video distribution, data distribution, CCTV and access control.

McHenry Row

  • Description: Multi-building, mixed-use development consisting of two (2) covered parking garages, two (2) multi-family dwelling buildings, an office building and a grocery store.  Design tasks included site lighting, interior utility power lighting, emergency egress and exiting lighting, multi-voltage/multi-service utility power distribution, fire alarm detection and alarm, structured cabling for voice, video and data distribution systems and branch circuit wiring.  Office building obtained a LEED Silver rating.

  • Description: To develop electrical drawings associate with the construction of a new, underground, emergency water transfer vault. The purpose of the vault was to unite the water systems from the City of Salisbury with the Town of Fruitland. In addition to coordinating the electrical service from the local utility company, in general the design encompassed utility power distribution, interior and exterior lighting and controls, motor controls, dehumidification and storm water discharge.

Hallie Hills Water Pumping and Treatment Station

Sterling Glen Waste Water Pumping Station

Perry Point Waste Water Pumping Station

  • Description: Design of mechanical (Ventilation and Heating) system for the pumping Station. Design included sizing of equipment (i.e. Fans, Unit Heaters) design of ductwork and Automatic temperature controls. To develop electrical drawings associated with the construction of a new, above ground, waste/grinder/pumping station. Station was to serve the needs of the existing Veterans Administration Hospital. In addition to extending the campus wide 14.6KV underground primary distribution system, in general the design encompassed utility power distribution, interior and exterior lighting and controls and motor controls. Motor controls were accomplished through the use of a bubbler type pneumatics.

Historic

Maryland Institue College of Art

  • Baltimore, Maryland
  • Construction Classification: Renovation
  • Size: 100,000 sq. ft.
  • Description: Project consisted of converting the historic Women’s Hospital on Lafayette Street in Baltimore City into a 72 unit, 193 bed student dormitory facility complete with art studios and cafeteria with full commercial grade kitchen. Building is seven (7) stories with a total area of approximately 100,000 square feet. Heating and air conditioning for the building is accomplished through its central plant and a network of piping to individual dual temp vertical fan coil units throughout. Controls for the HVAC system are DDC type. Fire protection for the building consists of a sprinkler system (with fire pump) and voice evacuation type fire alarm system. A new secondary utility power service was installed and originates from a 277/480 volt pad mounted transformer. The NEC’s “Six Disconnect” rule was applied in order to service the network of dry type transformers, feeders and panelboards throughout. A load center was installed in each dormitory unit for servicing its associated branch circuits, wiring devices and lights. The design also included structured wiring for telephone and cable TV throughout. Cafeteria and Kitchen was designed for a capacity of about 285 students. Emergency egress and exit lighting was accomplished through the installation of self-contain battery operated lights and exit signs.

  • Size: 105,000 sq. ft.
  • Description: Design of mechanical, plumbing and steam systems for the renovation of a 9 story, 105,000 sq. ft., $8 million historic building. Design included sizing of equipment (i.e. cooling tower, boilers, steam heat exchangers, steam generators) design of mechanical systems, design and sizing of dual temperature, steam piping, sanitary piping, storm water piping, domestic piping and natural gas piping.

  • Size: 63,000 sq. ft.
  • Description: Design of mechanical, plumbing and steam systems for the renovation of a 11 story, 63,000 sq. ft., $6 million historic building. Design included sizing of equipment (i.e. cooling tower, boilers, steam heat exchangers, steam generators) design of mechanical systems, design and sizing of dual temperature, steam piping, sanitary piping, storm water piping, domestic piping and natural gas piping.

South Baltimore General Hospital

  • Baltimore City, Maryland
  • Construction Classification: Renovation
  • Size: 45,000 sq. ft.
  • Description: Project consisted of transforming the previous 1960’s era South Baltimore General Hospital into a multi-family dwelling condominium building.  For historic preservation reasons, portions of the existing entrance were required to be restored.   Design tasks included building mounted site lighting, interior utility power lighting, emergency egress and exiting lighting, utility power distribution, fire alarm detection and alarm, structured cabling for voice, video and data distribution systems, access control, video surveillance and branch circuit wiring.  Since the building required its electrical service to be upgraded, design tasks also involved coordination with the local Power Company.

Sustainable Designs

Patuxent Research and Rescue Facility

  • Laurel, Maryland
  • Construction Classification: New/Renovation
  • Size: 136,000 sq. ft.
  • Description: The design of Telecommunications, Sound, A/V and Electronic Security Systems for two (2) new buildings and one (1) existing building with a combined area of approximately 136,000 sq. ft. In addition to the design of new systems, tasks also include evaluating the existing IT system components for reuse. Types of building uses include laboratories, offices, storage and maintenance. In regards to telecommunication systems, designs are inclusive of both raceways and structured cabling. Some wireless communications has also been designed. In regards to Sound, A/V, Access Control and CCTV systems, designs are inclusive of all components and wiring needed for turnkey operations. CCTV systems shall be used for both security type surveillance and for monitoring wildlife.

Perry Hall Library

  • Baltimore, Maryland
  • Construction Classification: New
  • Size: 25,000 sq. ft.
  • Description: Project consisted of the construction of a new single story structure with a total area of approximately 25,000 sq. ft. The building is among the first LEED Silver rated structures in Baltimore County, Maryland. Fire protection for the building is accomplished through the installation of a deluge dry type sprinkler system that is activated by area smoke detectors monitored by the building’s fire alarm and detection system. A new secondary metered utility power service was installed and originates from a Power Company 120/28 volt pad mounted transformer. Emergency egress and exit lighting was accomplished through the installation of self-contain battery operated lights and exit signs. Among the other special electrical systems designed and installed includes data, voice, paging, audio/visual, intrusion protection and CCTV.

Metro Park Office Building 8

  • Alexandria, Virginia
  • Construction Classification: New
  • Size: 156,000 sq. ft.
  • Description: Project consisted of the construction of a new five (5) story, plus basement, core and shell office building with a total area of approximately 156,000 sq. ft. Building was designed to achieve a LEED Silver rating. Heating and air conditioning for the building is accomplished through the installation of a single main variable volume rooftop unit and a network of ducts to feed VAV boxes for local comfort control. Controls for the HVAC system are DDC type. Fire protection for the building consists of a sprinkler system (with fire pump), together with an address able type fire alarm and detection system. A new secondary metered utility power service was installed and originates from a Power Company 277/480 volt pad mounted transformer. The design included a vertical raceway infrastructure for installation of voice, video and data cabling by the future tenants. Emergency egress and exit lighting is accomplished through the installation of an exterior pad mounted generator with associated distribution equipment and feeders. Generators also serves the building’s elevators.

Montgomery County Short Circuit Study

  • Rockville, Maryland
  • Construction Classification: Renovation
  • Size: N/A
  • Description: Upon completing the construction of the building’s new mission critical Data Center, both operational observation and documentation tasks were performed in order to commission the various portions of the newly installed utility and emergency power distribution systems.  Among the equipment commissioned included dual 225KVA UPS units, dual 500KW diesel engine generator sets, and seven (7) automatic transfer switches.

Queen Anne's County Animal Quarantine Center

  • Queenstown, Maryland
  • Construction Classification: New
  • Size: 600 sq. ft.
  • Description: New 600 sq. ft. structure for the quarantine and care of captured or neglected animals.  Mechanical designs included a split system heat pump, exhaust fans and distribution ductwork.  Plumbing designs included domestic water and sanitary piping systems.  Electrical designs included interior utility powered lighting, emergency egress and exit lighting, branch circuit wiring for general and specific equipment power and power distribution.  Efforts also included coordination with the local utility company in order to provide a separate electric service and meter.

Charlotte Hall Veterans Home

  • Charlotte Hall, Maryland
  • Construction Classification: Renovation
  • Size: N/A
  • Description: Performed site investigations and developed condition study/report on existing MEP and IT infrastructure for 5 campus buildings. Study also involved economic analysis to develop alternative fuel sources for operating the central plants in each building.

Tidewater Maintenance Facility

  • Construction Classification: New
  • Size: 15,000 sq. ft.
  • Description: Project consisted of the construction of a new two (2) story 6,000 sq. ft. office and retail; One story 9,000 sq. ft. repair building. Heating and air conditioning for the office and retail building is accomplished through the installation of several split system heat pumps. Retail was on the lower half of the two story building and offices on the upper half. The repair bays were design with general ventilation, heating and propeller type fans. Gas sensors for both gasoline and diesel were required to control the ventilation fans. Sand and Oil interceptor was design for drainage from the repair bays. The bays were designed to accommodate boats from approximately 30 foot high and 55 feet long.

MS Walks

A  Squared Plus Engineering Support Group, LLC has participated in the MS Walk for the past five years in Towson, Maryland. We walk for friends and family that have Multiple Sclerosis. Donations received go to studies which hope to reveal the cause and cure of the disease. In addition, MS donations provides education, programs and services to everyone who is affected by Multiple Sclerosis.

A Squared Plus Engineering Support Group, LLC has begun to walk in Alzheimer's walks in Huntington, West Virginia. We walk for family members that have been diagnosed with the disease. All donations recieved help to find the cause, cure, and prevention of the disease, as well as providing educational programs and services to those affected by the disease.
